Understanding Flea Infestations

The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is by far the most common flea species found in UK homes, despite its name — it infests cats, dogs, rabbits, and other domestic animals, and will readily bite humans. Fleas are small (1–3mm), dark brown, and move very quickly, making them difficult to spot. Their bites cause intense itching and, in some cases, allergic reactions.

What most people don't realise is that the adult fleas you can see on your pet or jumping in your carpet represent only around 5% of the total flea population in your home. The remaining 95% — eggs, larvae, and pupae — are hidden in carpets, soft furnishings, bedding, skirting boards, and floor crevices. This is why flea infestations are so difficult to eliminate with pet treatments alone, and why professional treatment of the home environment is almost always necessary.

Intense, itchy bites on humans and pets
Allergic dermatitis in sensitive animals
Tapeworm transmission to pets
Anaemia in young or small animals from heavy infestations
Rapid re-infestation if eggs and larvae are not treated
Infestations persist long after a pet has left the property
Bites concentrated on ankles, lower legs, and waist
Psychological distress and disrupted sleep

Signs of a Flea Infestation

Bites on humans: Small, red, intensely itchy bites — typically in clusters or lines around the ankles, lower legs, and waist. Unlike bed bug bites, flea bites usually have a red halo around the central bite point.
Scratching pets: Excessive scratching, grooming, or biting at the skin — particularly around the neck, base of the tail, and belly. Hair loss and skin irritation in these areas are common signs of a flea infestation.
Flea dirt: Tiny dark specks — actually dried blood — in pet bedding, carpets, and soft furnishings. To confirm it is flea dirt rather than ordinary dust, place some on damp white paper: flea dirt will dissolve into a reddish-brown smear.
Visible fleas: Adult fleas may be visible jumping in carpets, on pet bedding, or on light-coloured surfaces. A simple test: wear white socks and walk slowly across the carpet — fleas will jump onto the socks and be visible against the white fabric.
Flea eggs: Tiny white oval eggs, approximately 0.5mm long, shed from the pet's coat into carpets and bedding. They are very difficult to see with the naked eye but can be found with a magnifying glass in heavily infested areas.

Why DIY Flea Treatment Often Fails

Supermarket flea sprays and foggers (flea bombs) are widely available, but they have significant limitations. Most consumer products only kill adult fleas on contact and have no residual effect — meaning they do not kill eggs, larvae, or pupae, which make up 95% of the infestation. Flea pupae are particularly resistant: they can remain dormant inside their cocoon for months, protected from insecticides, and emerge as adults when they detect the vibration and warmth of a host. This is why many people treat their home, think the problem is solved, and then experience a sudden re-emergence of fleas weeks later. Professional treatment uses insect growth regulators (IGRs) alongside residual insecticides to break the flea life cycle at every stage.

Our Flea Treatment Process

1

Preparation Advice

Before treatment, we ask you to vacuum all carpets, soft furnishings, and skirting boards thoroughly (this stimulates flea pupae to hatch, making them vulnerable to treatment), wash all pet bedding at 60°C, and treat your pet with a veterinary-approved flea product. We provide a preparation checklist when you book.

2

Residual Insecticide Treatment

Our technician applies a professional-grade residual insecticide to all carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, skirting boards, and floor crevices. The product remains active on treated surfaces for several weeks, killing adult fleas that emerge from pupae after treatment.

3

Insect Growth Regulator (IGR)

We apply an IGR alongside the residual insecticide. IGRs prevent flea eggs and larvae from developing into adults, breaking the reproductive cycle and preventing re-infestation. This is the key difference between professional treatment and most consumer products.

4

Post-Treatment Guidance

We advise you not to vacuum for at least 14 days after treatment to allow the residual insecticide to remain active. You may continue to see some adult fleas for 2–3 weeks as pupae hatch — this is normal and expected. We provide full aftercare instructions.

5

Follow-Up if Required

In most cases, a single professional treatment is sufficient. If flea activity continues beyond 4 weeks, we offer a follow-up visit. We stand behind our work and will not consider the job complete until the infestation is resolved.

Flea Treatment for Landlords and Rental Properties

Flea infestations in rental properties are a common problem, particularly when a previous tenant had pets. Flea pupae can remain dormant in carpets for months — sometimes longer — and hatch when new occupants move in and provide a warm, vibrating host. New tenants who have never owned pets are often baffled to find themselves being bitten in a property where there are no animals.

Country Pest Solutions provides a fast, professional flea treatment service for landlords and letting agents across the North West. We can treat properties between tenancies to ensure they are flea-free before new tenants move in, and we provide written treatment reports for your records. We understand the time pressures of property management and work efficiently to minimise void periods.

Quick Answers

Do I need to treat my pet too?

Yes — treating the home without treating the pet will not resolve the infestation. Use a veterinary-approved flea product on your pet before or on the day of treatment.

How long does treatment take?

Most homes take 1–2 hours to treat. You will need to stay out of the property for approximately 2 hours after treatment while the product dries.

Will I still see fleas after treatment?

Yes, for 2–3 weeks. Pupae hatch after treatment and are killed by the residual insecticide. This is normal — do not re-treat during this period.
