Bird Culling
Air Rifle — Commercial
Where bird populations have become established and proofing alone is insufficient, targeted culling using air rifles provides rapid, effective, and discreet population reduction for commercial sites. All work is carried out under the relevant general licences by trained, experienced marksmen.
When Is Air Rifle Culling the Right Approach?
Bird proofing is always the long-term solution, but when an established population is causing immediate damage, health risks, or compliance failures, culling is often required as part of an integrated management programme to reduce numbers before proofing works are installed.
Air rifles are the preferred method for commercial site culling because they are quiet, accurate, and do not require the site to be vacated. Operations can be carried out early morning or at dusk to minimise disruption to business operations.
All culling operations are conducted under the relevant Natural England General Licences (GL04/GL05), which permit the taking of certain pest bird species to prevent the spread of disease and to preserve public health and safety.
Typical Commercial Applications
Industrial & Warehouse Sites
Large flat roofs and open loading bays attract significant pigeon populations. Culling combined with proofing provides rapid resolution.
Retail Parks & Supermarkets
Bird fouling on customer walkways creates slip hazards and hygiene issues. Discreet early-morning culling minimises disruption.
Food Production & Processing
Bird activity near food handling areas is a critical hygiene failure. Rapid population reduction is often required to meet compliance deadlines.
Construction Sites
Established roosts on partially completed structures are best addressed before the building is enclosed.
Car Parks & Multi-Storeys
Pigeon colonies in multi-storey car parks cause persistent fouling of vehicles and structural deterioration.
Agricultural Buildings
Grain stores, barns, and agricultural buildings attract large pigeon populations that contaminate feed and damage stored crops.
Our Approach
Site Survey & Risk Assessment
We visit the site to assess the species present, population size, roosting and feeding patterns, and the suitability of air rifle culling given the site layout, neighbouring properties, and public access.
Licence Verification & Method Statement
We confirm the applicable General Licence conditions, prepare a method statement, and agree operational timings with you to minimise disruption.
Culling Operations
Experienced marksmen carry out culling operations at agreed times — typically early morning or dusk when bird activity is highest and site activity is lowest. Air rifles are used for their accuracy, low noise, and suitability for confined spaces.
Carcass Removal & Disposal
All carcasses are removed and disposed of in accordance with current animal by-products regulations. No carcasses are left on site.
Population Monitoring & Follow-Up
We monitor population levels and carry out follow-up visits as required. Culling is most effective when combined with a proofing programme to prevent recolonisation.
Legal Framework
Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
Most wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. However, Natural England issues General Licences that permit the control of certain species — including feral pigeons and herring gulls — for specific purposes including preventing the spread of disease and preserving public health and safety. All our culling operations are conducted strictly within the terms of the applicable General Licences.
We will always advise you on the legal position before any work commences. If a species present on your site is not covered by a General Licence, we will advise on the correct approach, which may include applying for a specific licence from Natural England.
